How Long Does a New Driveway Take in Dublin? A Realistic Timeline

One of the most common questions we get asked — and one of the harder ones to answer accurately without seeing the specific project. Here's a realistic guide to timelines for each surface type, from enquiry to handover.

The Pre-Installation Phase

From initial enquiry to installation, allow:

  • Enquiry to site survey: Typically 3–5 working days. We prioritise getting to site surveys quickly, but in busy periods (spring and summer) it can be a week.
  • Survey to written quote: 24 hours — this is our standard.
  • Accepting quote to start date: Depends on our current schedule. In summer, typically 2–4 weeks. In winter, often sooner.

Total from first call to work starting: typically 3–6 weeks in busy periods, 1–3 weeks in quieter periods.

Block Paving Installation Time

A standard single driveway (40–60 sqm, herringbone pattern, no steps): 2–3 working days

Breakdown:

  • Day 1: Excavation and waste removal, sub-base delivery and compaction, edging installation
  • Day 2–3: Block laying, plate compaction, jointing sand, clean-up

Larger driveways (80–100 sqm+) or those with circular features, steps, or complex patterns: 3–5 working days

Tarmac Installation Time

A standard residential driveway (40–60 sqm): 1–2 working days

Tarmac is the fastest-install surface. The machinery works quickly once the sub-base is right.

Larger driveways or those requiring significant sub-base remediation: 2–3 days.

Waiting time after installation: 24 hours before light traffic, 48 hours before vehicles.

Resin-Bound Installation Time

A standard driveway (40–60 sqm) on an existing sound tarmac base: 1 day installation + 24 hours curing

If a new tarmac base is required first, add 1 day + curing time for the base.

Concrete Installation Time

A standard driveway (40–60 sqm): 2–3 days installation + 7 days curing before vehicles

Concrete takes longer to cure than other surfaces — this is the main consideration if you need the driveway back in use quickly.

What Can Cause Delays?

Weather: Heavy rain delays laying of sand-bedded block paving. Hard frost delays tarmac. Resin needs dry conditions and a minimum temperature. We monitor the forecast and schedule accordingly.

Site complications: Finding unexpected drainage issues, utilities, or soft ground during excavation may require additional work.

Material supply: Specific block colours or natural stone sometimes have lead times. We'll advise at the quotation stage.

Can the Driveway Be Done in Sections?

For larger or more complex projects, sometimes yes. For standard driveways, we prefer to complete in one phase rather than leaving a half-finished job. We'll discuss the programme with you at the quotation stage.
