Gravel Driveways Dublin — Loose and Resin-Bound Gravel

There are two very different gravel driveways. Traditional loose gravel is the most cost-effective driveway surface there is — decorative stone laid over a membrane and compacted sub-base, with edging to keep it contained. It's permeable, quick to install and easy to top up, though stones can migrate and need occasional raking.

Resin-bound gravel takes the same decorative aggregate and binds it into a smooth, stable, permeable surface that doesn't scatter or rut. It costs more but eliminates the main drawbacks of loose gravel while keeping the natural look. We install both and will help you weigh cost against convenience.

A gravel driveway is only as good as what's under the stone. We excavate to 100–150mm, lay a woven geotextile membrane to stop the gravel sinking into the soil and to suppress weeds, install and compact a MOT Type 1 sub-base, then spread and rake the chosen gravel to a consistent depth. Proper steel, aluminium or concrete edging is essential — without it, gravel spreads onto paths, lawns and the road.

Done this way, a gravel driveway drains freely, resists weeds and stays where it's put.

Loose gravel is easy to live with: rake it level occasionally, top up the stone every few years as it settles and compacts, and pull the rare weed that finds its way through the membrane. Choosing an angular gravel rather than rounded pea shingle helps the stones lock together and migrate less. Resin-bound gravel needs even less — just an occasional brush and wash.
