Block Paving Dublin — Driveways, Patios and Paths

Durable, attractive block paving for driveways, patios and paths using Kilsaran and Tobermore blocks.

Block paving is one of the most popular choices for driveways and patios across Dublin, and it's not hard to see why. A well-laid block paving driveway is durable, repairable, and looks sharp whether you're working with a traditional terrace or a modern detached home. At Driveways and Patios, we've been laying block paving across County Dublin and the surrounding counties for over 15 years.

We work with Kilsaran and Tobermore — two of the most respected block manufacturers in Ireland — and we'll talk you through the options in terms of colour, texture and pattern before we touch a spade. Every installation is done on a proper compacted sub-base, not a screed of sand with blocks plonked on top. The result is a driveway that stays level, drains properly, and handles Irish winters without heaving.

Every block paving job comes with a written guarantee covering workmanship. We don't take a deposit, and we'll have a written quote on the table within 24 hours of the site survey. We cover Dublin city and county, plus Kildare, Meath, Wicklow and further afield.

Materials and Options

Kilsaran Maxima

Heavy-duty concrete block with a textured finish. One of the most widely used in Irish residential driveways. Available in multiple colours including charcoal, buff, old red and mixed heritage.

Tobermore Tegula

Tumbled block with a slightly aged, natural appearance. Popular on period homes. Laid in herringbone or random patterns for character.

Tobermore Mayfair

Smooth, contemporary block with chamfered edges. Suits modern homes and goes particularly well with rendered or painted exteriors.

Kilsaran Riven

Split-face finish that mimics the look of natural stone at a lower cost. Good for blending with older brickwork.

Permeable blocks

Larger gap blocks with a permeable jointing compound. Required by Dublin City Council planning guidelines when a front garden is being paved.

Our Installation Process

  1. 1

    Free Site Survey

We come out to your property, assess the existing surface and sub-base conditions, take measurements, and discuss your options for pattern, colour and edging. No charge.

  2. 2

    Design and Written Quote

Within 24 hours of the survey, you receive a written quote covering every element — excavation, sub-base depth, blocks, jointing, edging, waste removal, and VAT. Nothing hidden.

  3. 3

    Excavation and Sub-base

We excavate to the correct depth for a 100–200mm compacted MOT Type 1 stone sub-base, depending on the load bearing requirements. This is the single most important step — it's what prevents sinking and unevenness.

  4. 4

    Edging and Kerbing

Concrete kerbs or block edging are laid and haunched in concrete before the main block area. This gives the finished driveway a clean, contained edge that won't spread.

  5. 5

    Block Laying

Blocks are laid on a 40mm sand bed in your chosen pattern — herringbone (most popular, most stable), basket weave, stretcher bond, or circular features as required.

  6. 6

    Vibration and Jointing

A plate compactor is run over the blocks to bed them firmly. Kiln-dried jointing sand is brushed in and the plate run again. This locks the pattern in place.

  7. 7

    Clean-up and Handover

All waste is removed from site. We walk you around the finished job, explain care and maintenance, and hand over the written guarantee.

What Affects the Cost of Block Paving?

Every block paving project is different. These are the main factors that influence the cost of your installation — the only way to get an accurate price for your specific job is a free site survey.

  • Project size in square metres
  • Existing surface removal (old tarmac, concrete or paving)
  • Sub-base depth required (dependent on ground conditions)
  • Drainage requirements (soakaway, channel drain, connection to existing system)
  • Block brand and range chosen (Kilsaran vs Tobermore, smooth vs tumbled)
  • Pattern complexity (herringbone is standard; circular features add time)
  • Edging type (standard block edge vs granite setts vs bull-nosed kerb)
  • Steps and levels (multiple levels add significant work)
  • Access constraints (narrow entries, tight turns for machinery)
  • Time of year (ground conditions affect sub-base work in winter)

We don't publish fixed prices because they'd be misleading. We offer a free site survey and written quote within 24 hours — covering every element, no hidden extras.
