These two terms are often confused, and the difference matters. Resin-bound is the premium system: the aggregate is fully mixed with resin and trowelled to a smooth, seamless, fully permeable surface. Water drains straight through it, which satisfies Irish planning requirements without separate drainage. Resin-bonded is a cheaper process where resin is applied and loose stone scattered on top — it is not permeable and sheds stones over time.

Resin-bound is fully permeable, so it handles heavy Irish rainfall without puddling and meets SuDS (Sustainable Drainage Systems) expectations for front driveways — no soakaway or separate drainage usually needed. It's smooth underfoot, which makes it ideal for wheelchairs, prams and bins, and weed growth is minimal because the resin fully encapsulates the stone.

The key to a lasting resin driveway is the base. Resin-bound is laid over a permeable sub-base or, more commonly, an existing sound tarmac or concrete base. We assess the base carefully — laying resin over a failing surface simply transfers the problem to the new finish.

A quality resin-bound driveway lasts 15 to 25 years. Maintenance is minimal: an occasional brush and a power wash a couple of times a year keeps it looking new, and because the surface is seamless there are no joints for weeds to colonise. UV-stable resins resist yellowing, which is why the specification of materials matters as much as the installation.
