How Much Does Block Paving Cost in Dublin? A Cost Guide for 2026
If you've searched for the cost of block paving in Dublin, you've probably found a range of "from €X per m²" figures that don't add up to a coherent picture. They don't, because the cost of block paving genuinely varies based on multiple factors that can't be assessed from behind a keyboard. Here's what actually affects the cost — and how you can get an honest price for your specific project.
Why We Don't Publish Fixed Prices
We don't publish fixed prices for block paving because they'd be meaningless. Consider: two driveways of exactly the same size can have completely different costs if one has solid ground in good condition and the other has a failed sub-base that needs significant remediation. A project with a drainage requirement costs more than one without. A client who wants Tobermore's premium tumbled range will pay more than one using standard Kilsaran stock blocks. A driveway with a circular feature panel in the centre costs more than a straight herringbone.
Publishing a 'from' figure tells you nothing useful and either sets expectations too low (when you see the real quote) or too high (and you dismiss a price that's actually reasonable for your project). The only price that means anything is a price written after someone has stood in your driveway, assessed the ground, measured the area, understood what drainage is required, and talked through your material options. That's what we offer — and it's free.
What Affects the Cost
Project size
The total area to be paved, measured in square metres, is the primary driver of block paving cost. Larger projects have lower unit costs due to the fixed mobilisation costs (getting the machinery and team to site) being spread across more area. A small courtyard of 15–20 sqm will have a higher cost per sqm than a large driveway of 80–100 sqm.
Existing surface removal
If there is an existing concrete, tarmac, or paving surface, it needs to be broken out and removed. This involves a small breaker or mini-digger, labour time, and skip or disposal costs. The type of existing surface matters — old concrete can be harder to break out than tarmac. If the driveway is currently bare soil or gravel, there's no break-out cost.
Sub-base depth and ground conditions
Block paving needs a properly compacted sub-base of MOT Type 1 crushed stone. The depth required depends on the ground conditions beneath. Good solid ground with no history of movement might need 100mm. Soft ground, made-up ground, or a site with drainage issues might need 200mm or more. Sub-base material is bought by the tonne and compacted on site — more depth means more material and more work. This is determined at the site survey.
Drainage requirements
Dublin City Council and county councils require that surface water from a new front driveway doesn't discharge to the public road. This can be addressed with permeable paving, drainage to a garden or soakaway, or a channel drain at the bottom of the drive. Each solution has a different cost. A project with a simple soakaway costs more than one that drains naturally to an adjacent lawn area. A project requiring a linear channel drain and underground pipework costs more again.
Block brand and range
Kilsaran standard stock blocks, Tobermore standard ranges, and Tobermore premium tumbled ranges all have different material costs. The difference per sqm between the cheapest standard block and a premium tumbled block is significant when multiplied across a full driveway. We'll show you samples from the full range during the site survey so you can make an informed choice.
Pattern complexity
Herringbone at 45° or 90° is the standard pattern and the most efficient to lay. Basket weave is similar. Stretcher bond is fast. Circular feature panels, fan patterns, and intricate multi-colour designs all take significantly more laying time — individual blocks need to be cut to fit the curve or pattern. A driveway with a feature panel in the centre costs more than a plain herringbone across the full area.
Edging and kerbing
Every block paving project needs edge restraints — either a concrete kerb haunched in, a block-on-edge restraint, or a specific decorative edging. Granite sett edging is premium; a plain block-on-edge is standard. The linear metres of edging, and the specification chosen, add to the total cost.
Steps and level changes
If the driveway has a gradient that requires steps, or if the rear of the driveway meets the house at a different level from the road, steps need to be built as part of the project. Each step involves forming, foundations, and matching block or natural stone risers. Multiple steps or complex level changes add significant work.
Access to the site
Narrow entrances, low overhead clearance, or restricted access for machinery can limit what plant can be used and increase hand-dig requirements. A site where a mini-digger can work freely costs less per day than one requiring hand excavation throughout. Equally, a project on a busy road where traffic management is needed adds to site management costs.
Pillars and walling
Entrance pillars, boundary walls, or low edging walls are commonly included as part of a driveway project. Each of these is priced separately — pillar construction involves foundations, blockwork or brickwork, and a coping stone cap. A pair of rendered concrete block pillars with lighting recesses is significantly more involved than a pair of simple block pillars with a granite cap.
