How Much Does a Gravel Driveway Cost in Dublin? A Cost Guide for 2026

Gravel is the most cost-effective driveway surface there is, but "gravel driveway" covers two very different products at very different prices — loose gravel and resin-bound gravel. Most "from €X per m²" figures online compare apples with oranges. Here is what genuinely drives the cost of a gravel driveway in Dublin, and how to get an honest figure for your project.

Why We Don't Publish Fixed Prices

We don't publish a fixed gravel driveway price because the right specification depends on your site. A loose-gravel drive over a simple, well-draining base costs far less than a resin-bound gravel surface laid over a new permeable sub-base. The amount of excavation, the edging needed to contain the stone, and whether the ground drains freely all move the figure.

The only number worth anything is one written after we've seen the site, checked the ground and drainage, and agreed the type of gravel and finish with you. That survey and quote are free.

What Affects the Cost

1

Loose gravel or resin-bound gravel

This is the single biggest cost decision. Loose decorative gravel over a membrane and sub-base is the cheapest driveway surface available. Resin-bound gravel — the same stone bound into a smooth, stable, permeable surface — costs considerably more per square metre but eliminates stone migration and gives a far neater, lower-maintenance finish.

2

Project size

Total area in square metres is the main driver. As with all driveways, larger areas have a lower cost per square metre because fixed costs — getting plant and crew to site — are spread further. A small area carries a higher unit cost than a full driveway.

3

Existing surface removal

If there is old concrete, tarmac or paving to break out and remove, that adds machinery time, labour and disposal costs. A driveway that is currently soil or worn gravel has little or no break-out cost.

4

Sub-base depth and ground conditions

A gravel driveway still needs a properly excavated and compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base over a geotextile membrane — skipping this is why cheap gravel drives rut and sink. Soft or made-up ground needs a deeper sub-base, which means more stone and more work. The depth is determined at the survey.

5

Edging and containment

Loose gravel must be contained or it spreads onto paths, lawns and the road. Steel, aluminium or concrete edging is priced by the linear metre, and the specification chosen affects the total. Resin-bound needs edge restraint too, though the bound surface itself does not migrate.

6

Gravel type and depth

Decorative aggregates vary in price by type, colour and origin, and angular gravels (which lock together and migrate less) can differ from rounded shingle. Loose gravel is laid to a minimum depth, so a deeper finish uses more stone.

7

Drainage requirements

Gravel is naturally permeable, which often satisfies the requirement that surface water from a front driveway does not run onto the public road. Where extra drainage or a soakaway is needed because of ground conditions, that adds to the cost. Resin-bound gravel is fully permeable when laid over a permeable base.

8

Access to the site

Narrow or awkward access that prevents a mini-digger working freely increases hand-dig time and cost. Free machine access keeps the groundwork efficient.
