How Much Does a Tarmac Driveway Cost in Dublin? A Cost Guide for 2026
Tarmac is often described as the most cost-effective driveway option, but the range of possible costs for a tarmac driveway in Dublin is wider than most guides suggest. Here's an honest breakdown of what drives that variation, and why the only useful price is one that accounts for your specific site.
Why We Don't Publish Fixed Prices
The cost of a tarmac driveway depends heavily on what's under the surface. A driveway with solid, stable ground that needs minimal sub-base work costs significantly less than one with poor ground conditions, soft spots, or a drainage problem. A driveway where we can lay directly over a sound existing surface costs less than one requiring full excavation. A single-layer wearing course costs less than a base course plus wearing course.
Publishing a 'per square metre' rate that ignores these variables would either mislead customers into expecting a price that doesn't reflect their actual job, or cause them to overestimate costs. Neither helps anyone. We give free site surveys and written quotes that reflect what your driveway actually needs.
What Affects the Cost
Area size
The total square metres to be surfaced is the primary driver. Fixed costs (mobilisation, machinery) are spread across a larger area on bigger jobs, making the unit cost lower for larger driveways.
Existing surface condition
If the existing tarmac or concrete is structurally sound, we can sometimes overlay rather than remove — this saves the cost of break-out and disposal. If the existing surface is failing or the sub-base is compromised, it needs to come out. This decision is made at the site survey.
Number of layers required
A light-use domestic driveway can often be completed with a single wearing course on a good sub-base. Driveways that will take heavier vehicles, or sites with weaker ground, benefit from a base course layer beneath the wearing course. Two layers cost more than one.
Sub-base depth and ground condition
As with block paving, the sub-base requirement varies with the ground. Good ground needs 100–150mm; problematic ground may need significantly more. Sub-base material and compaction is priced by the job based on what's actually needed.
Finish type
Standard black tarmac is the baseline. Red tarmac uses a different aggregate and pigment and costs more per tonne. Tar-and-chip (spray and chip) involves a different application process and chip material, with a different cost profile. We'll explain the options during the site survey.
Drainage requirements
Channel drains, soakaways, or French drains required as part of the project add to the cost. The type and extent of drainage needed depends on the site — this is assessed at survey.
Edging and kerbing
Tarmac needs edge restraints — either concrete block edging, kerbs, or channel drains at the base. The specification of edging affects cost.
Access for machinery
Tarmac is laid using specialist paving machines on larger driveways and by hand on smaller or restricted areas. Restricted access requiring hand-lay throughout takes longer and costs more.
