Driveway Drainage Dublin — SUDS, Soakaways and Channel Drains

Drainage is the most overlooked part of any driveway — and the cause of most failures. Water that can't escape pools on the surface, undermines the sub-base, freezes and cracks surfaces in winter, and in the worst cases runs back toward the house. In Ireland, with our rainfall, getting drainage right isn't optional. It's also a planning requirement: surface water from a front driveway must not discharge onto the public road.

We design drainage into every driveway and patio we build, and we also fix drainage on existing surfaces that flood or hold water.

Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) manage rainwater close to where it falls rather than piping it straight to the sewer. For driveways this means permeable surfaces — resin-bound, permeable block paving or gravel — that let water soak through, often combined with a soakaway: an underground stone-filled pit that lets water disperse into the ground. These approaches satisfy Irish planning requirements for front driveways and prevent the runoff that causes flooding downstream. We design the right combination for your ground conditions.

Where a surface needs to shed water to a point, we install channel (linear) drains across the driveway or at the threshold of a garage to catch runoff, set correct falls so water always flows to the drain, and connect to a soakaway or approved outfall. On sites with heavy or clay soil that drains slowly, soakaway design has to account for the ground's absorption rate. We assess the ground, the levels and the existing drainage at the survey and design a system that keeps the surface dry and compliant.
